Throughout the US and around the world on April 16th-18th, 2004 youth addressed the needs (1) of their local communities through service in celebration of National and Global Youth Service Day. As the largest service event in the world, youth involved in National Youth Service Day (2) (NYSD) educate their peers about maximizing the impact of their service through informed voting, youth-led advocacy, and other civic engagement efforts while educating the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leads.
Often the service on National Youth Service Day involves youth bridging the generational gap by providing much needed services for their community's seniors, or partnering with senior service groups to address other community needs. These intergenerational projects look different from city to city. For example, in Anchorage, Alaska, youth who are members of the "Shungnak WART Pack" helped the elders in their village by shoveling snow (3), carrying groceries, and repairing senior’s homes. Youth from Roanoke Valley, assisted an elderly woman, who recently became disabled, outfit her home for her recent disability by installing a handrail, and deadbolts, repairing her concrete steps, and painting the outside of her home.
